The Proton

A proton is a subatomic particle with a relative electric charge of +1. Protons, along with neutrons, make up the nuclei of atoms.

Protons were originally thought to be elementary particles, but they are now known to be made of quarks. A proton consists of three quarks: two up quarks with relative charges of +⅔ each, and one down quark with a relative charge of −⅓. Particles made of quarks are called hadrons, and particles made of three quarks are known as baryons, so a proton is both a hadron and a baryon.
